Topic: Will Humans ever Walk on Mars

We have been to the Moon but if the human diaspora is to spread out across the Universe the obvious next step is to go to Mars as it is one of Earth’s nearest neighbours with surface conditions not too dissimilar to our own. It is a difficult place to go to particularly if we want to get back in one piece. Apollo 11’s return trip to the Moon lasted eight days. A return trip to Mars would take over two years with current technology. We have successfully put robotic missions on Mars but landing human beings is much more challenging. How might we do it? What problems would we need to overcome? Is it worth it?

Speaker: Robin Mobbs is a Lead Educator and Space Advocate for the National Space Academy with a particular interest in human spaceflight. He gives talks and runs space sessions in schools, colleges and with other groups across the region and more widely in places such as the Royal Observatory Science Centre, the Royal Astronomical Society, the Royal Institution, the Telegraph Museum near Land’s End and even Shanghai.
