Fourteen members of our walking groups spent a wonderful week exploring the beautiful scenery of Slovenia. With spectacular walks, great company and plenty of laughter, it was a holiday to remember – and, of course, every trip has its stories!
Day two saw Rik, consulting the infallible oracle known as All Trails, lead us on a route that promised magnificent views of a famous waterfall if we traversed not one, but two sides of the mountain. After negotiating increasingly steep and rocky paths, we finally reached the viewpoint and searched eagerly for the falls. We all agreed they were definitely there—we could hear them—but seeing them proved rather more tricky, as they were almost entirely hidden behind the rock face.
It was only after we’d completed the walk that we spotted a notice describing the Komarca Face as “one of the most demanding mountain trails in the area” and warning that it was “unfit for descent.” We were all rather pleased to read that after we’d safely reached the bottom!
Another memorable day saw Neil leading all fourteen walkers up Silja Mountain. However, as the climb became steeper, the group gradually became smaller. Some discovered the attractions of cafés, others developed an appreciation for benches, while a few decided the halfway point offered scenery quite good enough.
By the time Neil reached the summit and looked behind him, only six loyal companions remained—the rest were enjoying the holiday at rather different altitudes.
The week provided stunning scenery, plenty of exercise and, above all, wonderful company. We returned home with happy memories, lots of stories and enough photographs to keep friends and family occupied for months to come.
