Learn all about the Freedom of the City of London, an ancient ceremony dating back to the thirteenth century. Your speaker was only the 37th Clerk of the Chamberlain’s Court since 1294 so has an encyclopedic knowledge of the Freedom, what it means, privileges, ways of obtaining it and will tell you the truth about taking a flock of sheep over London Bridge. He will also tell you about famous recipients of the Freedom.

Speaker: Murray Craig has just retired as Clerk of the Chamberlain’s Court after 25 years. It is a unique post involving conducting the Freedom Ceremony and over the years has admitted everyone from Luciano Pavarotti, JK Rowling, Joanna Lumley, Bob Geldof, Sir Andrew Strauss and Theresa May, He has been the conduit between the 110 Livery Companies of the City of London and the Court of Aldermen, advising and guiding on Charters, Ordinances and protocol. He is an expert on the Livery Companies, their history, traditions and modern role. Murray is a qualified City of London Guide (Red Badge) and gives guided tours of the Square Mile.
